Keith Allen Haring was an American artist known for his pop art that emerged from the New York City graffiti subculture of the 1980s. He used his animated imagery to advocate for safe sex and AIDS awareness, and his work has become a widely recognized visual language. Haring gained popularity through his spontaneous drawings in New York City subways and created colorful larger scale murals, many of them commissioned.

Haring's later work conveyed political and societal themes through his own iconography. He participated in renowned national and international group shows such as documenta in Kassel, the Whitney Biennial in New York, the São Paulo Biennial, and the Venice Biennale. Haring died on February 16, 1990. The Whitney Museum held a retrospective of his art in 1997.
